CHAPTER SIX

NOT EVEN SIMMERING tension and a sickening sense of needing to be on guard at all times could detract from the magnificence of her surroundings.

The following day was a busy one, with Niccolo’s clients arriving in stages, some by the very same helicopter that had transported her and Annalise to the yacht, others by speedboats, one of which was a dedicated speedboat that seemed to be stored somewhere within the vast hull of the yacht.

Because of the number of decks on the yacht, all of which overlooked the main entry point, Sophie and Annalise could keep a safe distance while they both watched the comings and goings, fascinated. There was a sense of urgency in the air, which even Annalise felt because she couldn’t quite focus on any of the fun activities Sophie had planned for the day.

The sun was beautifully warm, even in the shade where they both lounged on sofas that perched by one of three outdoor pools, this one small but with a lovely jacuzzi to one side. They could hear the distant sound of voices carrying on the warm air up to where they sat.

They had been shown to the pool area first thing by one of the many members of staff, and several hours later that very same member of staff had been their self-appointed waiter in residence, bringing them drinks and lunch and hovering to make sure their every need was met with speed.

They had swum and done some arts and crafts, and for a couple of hours they had watched a bit of television and then eaten at the private dining area just off the pool area.

And Niccolo? It was a little after four in the afternoon and Sophie had not laid eyes on him yet. She had finally stopped glancing surreptitiously in all directions, like a spy in a B-rated movie, and was just beginning to relax, back at the pool, when she was alerted to Niccolo’s presence by Annalise.

He was behind her and she froze for a few seconds, then turned around, her smile in place, the lectures she had given herself during the course of the day echoing in her ears.

The modest black swimsuit she wore suddenly felt like a thong bikini as she rose fluidly from the padded deckchair, swiftly wrapping her sarong around her waist while Niccolo was distracted by his daughter.

‘Had a good day?’ He glanced at her for a few seconds from the kneeling position he had adopted to look at his daughter’s sketchpad, and then stood up to move to one of the chairs next to where Sophie had been sitting moments earlier.

Suddenly roused from her natural tiredness after having spent most of the day outside in the sun, Annalise was now bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and desperate to commandeer her father’s attention.

Still in her swimsuit, she proceeded, for the next ten minutes, to proudly demonstrate her swimming prowess until, laughing, Niccolo stood up and started unbuttoning his loose white linen shirt.
